Transition in Progress (TiP): Making Space for Place is a bike-powered mobile lab, an online archive, and an ephemeral collection of artifacts, engaging with the city’s structure and its multiple protagonists through an in-vivo, bottom-up approach.’

This is fancy way of saying that the TiP team, Roberta, Elena and Valentina, spent countless hours visiting Toronto’s communities by bike – hearing and collecting people’s stories and personal mementos. One community they spent a good deal of time getting to know was Riverside, which they were originally drawn to by Elena’s uncle Larry – a Riverside resident and local historian of sorts. Larry met the TiP team at the Riverside BIA office back in the early days of summer 2015 and toured them through the neighbourhood; sharing his own memories of various businesses come and gone, history of landmark buildings, and a view of the area’s vibrant parks. They re-grouped back at the BIA office and from there hatched a plan to bring the project alive in Riverside, as part of the Riverside Walks event on September 12th (Riverside’s monthly local walking tours).

performigrations

The TiP project is part of a larger EU/Canada project Performigrations: People are the Territory. The project, coordinated by the University of Bologna, brings together an international team of six European co-organizers representing Italy, Greece, Portugal and Austria, and five partners representing Canada’s three largest provinces (Ontario, Quebec and BC), as well as five partners in the UK and Malta. Over two years, their goal was to produce seven travelling art installations.

At the ground level, TiP’s goal was to call attention to the frayed, messy and deeply interconnected layers of landscapes and stories that are often hidden. To do that, TiP visited four locations along Toronto’s Queen Street corridor, collecting a variety of natural specimens, local artifacts, testimonies and unique stories about migration and mobility, settlement and displacement, vivid recollection and forgotten memory. Their installation offered ‘snippets, slices and partial vistas on the swirling micro narratives that compose the city with and against the grain of governing, economic and political forces’.

In Riverside, the TiP project discovered a rich history, dating back to the 1800s and the Riverside BIA and many residents shared their memories and artifacts. People from all walks of life came forth to share with the team.

The mementos from Riverside were on display at Ryerson University from October 19-23. Visiting the display was a bit like taking a walk through the neighbourhood and being transported through time.

Change is in the Air: Riverside this Fall Part 2

So many exciting changes this fall in the Riverside ‘hood

Flaunt Boutique‘s new location ‘Untitled’ at 792 Queen St East, opened up with a soft launch on October 21st. They are still busy setting up their beautiful space which features a living green wall. You can see their amazing hair work with colour and sculpting on their Facebook and Twitter.

Just across the street, and beside Bergstrom Originals, the Sash & Bustle Bridal shop opened its doors at 779 Queen St East on October 5th. They are an ‘alternative bridal boutique featuring affordable luxe: bridal gowns and accessories’. Check out their trunk shows and other events coming up (by appointment).

Oso Viejo Imports launched at 700 Queen St East on September 11th, with a ‘family and friends’ celebration. They sell Mesquite table tops, ethically designed from 150-200 year old Mesquite trees ‘giving new function to damaged, dead trees for another century or more’.

BMO opened up their fully accessible space at 774 Queen East on October 26th. Their new space features shiny new ATMs, handy information screens showing news and weather, and beautiful, clean brightly lit space with the usual friendly faces.  Right next to BMO is definitely a Dollarama – again an accessible space (yay) – and they’re hiring!

Something’s coming in at 762 Queen St E (former ‘Hardware Interiors’ store). Looking forward to movement there!

Vietnamese food is still on its way with Lan Restaurant completing renovations at 755 Queen St East (right beside the BIA office).

A new bar is coming into the space at 747 Queen Street East (formerly 747 Wine Bar). I’ll be Seeing You is a bar owned by ‘sisters with a dollar and dream’, stay tuned!

At 729 Queen E (formerly Studio Pazo) a new bakery is rolling into the neighbourhood!  Sugar Loaf Bakery and Cafe promises non-traditional artisanal bakery.

The transformation of the Broadview Hotel at Queen and Broadview continues. Streetcar Developments is working hard to turn the space into a boutique hotel and restaurants – which requires restoration, stabilizing, and rebuilding from the bottom up and then the top down – whew! The latest word is for a spring 2016 opening (fingers crossed!).

The space at 682 Queen Street East (former Darkhorse location) continues its renovations into a new restaurant –  a peek in the windows confirms that work is going well!

Hair Code at 743 Queen St East is renovating…looking forward to beautiful changes ahead!

Rumour has it…

  • that a new cafe of sorts will be starting up in the space at  753 Queen St East (formerly Ambiance Chocolat) to compliment the nighttime hi-lo bar next door.

Last but certainly not least are updates on the planning of Riverside Square, a 4-acre site bounded by Queen on the north, Eastern on south, Don Roadway on west, and the condos on the east. The application for this development has been ongoing for at least two years and is moving into the home stretch with the final report submitted to the City this past week. Here are highlights of updates shared by Ward 30 Councillor Paula Fletcher in a November 3rd community newsletter:  the application maintains a 6-storey height limit on Queen Street East; increases animation on Queen Street by moving the car dealership to the industrialized portion of the site (along East Don Roadway); features a 780-square metre  urban park/public space on Queen at the new street leading into the development; includes a new dog off-leash area at the south end of the development; adds the first Woonerf east of the Don River; includes family-friendly unit sizes; has small scale retail space on Queen, including a grocery store; injects $5 million for the construction of affordable housing in the neighbourhood; adds up to 400 new skilled jobs with car dealerships and repair. Check out the full update!

Matt & Ben: Dynamic Duo Light Up Riverside

It will be a great occasion to meet friends and neighbours, and  take us gently into the holiday season:) A big THANK YOU to Matt and Ben for their continued support of this fun-filled event!

Matt_and_Ben_CarNow you’ll surely have seen Matt & Ben on neighbourhood billboards or working out in the community in suits and ties to find their clients the perfect property. But, we were interested in finding out more about this charming duo. We interviewed them and were surprised about their eclectic background and interests. In fact, it was in the the nightlife industry that these two first met.

What are some of your hobbies/ stuff that you love to do?

MattI am a former DJ and nightclub owner who still dabbles.  When I play for a crowd I specialize in house music.  I used to own many nightclubs but my flagship club was called Industry located at King/Strachan and was regarding as one of the best nightclubs in the world.  In my spare time I’m an avid golfer, skier and recreational cyclist.  I have a very close relationship with a large network of friends and family.

Ben –I am a family man with 2 great kids: Ben Jr and Addyson. Spending time with my awesome family, playing hockey and relaxing at the cottage are some of my favourite hobbies.  I am also really involved in different charitable initiatives including Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Big Brothers, and Good Shepherd Hostel.

What do you love about the East-End and in particular Riverside – what makes this area so unique?

MattFirstly I love my loft at Carlaw and Dundas which was initially why I moved to the area from downtown more specifically ‘the village’ (Carlton/Church).  I love the mixture of both creative people and professionals that all seem to have a fairly open minded outlook on life.  I also feel the age range in the neighbourhood is a good match for myself now being 41 years old.  Obviously the restaurants along Queen St E are second to none with my favourite spots being Prohibition, Lucky Chinese, Bonjour Brioche, Lady Marmalade, The Roy and Ascari.  Of course there are many more that I love but these are the ones that I have been to over and over.

Ben – One of the special characteristics is how close Riverside is to downtown, and yet it still maintains a unique small town character – the people around here are really friendly and there is an authentic community feel with a cosmopolitan flair.

When did you first come to Riverside – and what sold you on the area?

MattRE/MAX Hallmark realized that they needed to have some presence here and started to look for a building to purchase.  While the deal on the building we occupy at 785 Queen St E was still conditional, our president invited me to check out the new building and ask me where I would like my new office to be built.  I was thrilled because I live only a few blocks away and approximately 50% of our business is done in the neighbourhood.

Ben – I have actually been living close to Riverside since 2006. I fully got to know this great neighbourhood when we opened up the new RE/MAX Office in the spring of 2012.

What is a fun fact that people may not know about?

Matt – The elephant in the room is that I had a very successful Dj career both in Toronto and around the world.  Many of my clients are surprised to later find out that they have been working with DJ Matt C.  For those of you who don’t know, I had a very popular radio show on CFNY 102.1 live to air from the Phoenix in the early 90’s.  I also had a show on Energy 108 as well as a TV show called Dance Nation on CHCH TV 11 that I hosted.  Moreover, I spun seven nights a week from 1989 to 2001.  It was an amazing time in my life and was a perfect precursor for my current career.  It’s how I met my business partner Ben as well as hundreds of our clients.

Ben – I’ve been working in real estate for over 10 years, but Matt and I have been business partners for over 20 years. Before switching into real estate we were nightclub owners and event promoters.

What is your favourite part about the work that you do?

Matt – I enjoy all aspects of the real estate industry – and I have a love of architecture, interior design and inventory of homes.  I also enjoy the act of generating new clients through interesting marketing initiatives but the single thing that gets me most excited about real estate is generating multiple offers for my sellers or competing in multiple offers with my buyers.  It’s a very high stress emotional part of the business that I feel my experience is a major asset to my clients.

Ben – I love people and I love finding them their dream home. It’s a very rewarding business! Our clients are fantastic and I love making new friends through the work that I do. In fact, we would love for people to join us for the tree lighting ceremony at Light up Riverside on Nov 28th.

Matt & Ben are proud sponsors of Light Up the Riverside
